Security Tips

Online Security

  • Use Antivirus Protection: Maintain active and updated antivirus software from a reputable vendor. Schedule regular scans.
  • Keep Software Updated: Frequently update your computer’s operating system and other software (e.g., web browsers, Adobe products, Microsoft Office, etc).
  • Automate Software Updates: Enable automatic updates to ensure security patches are applied promptly.
  • Handle Suspected Malware Promptly: If you suspect malware infection, stop using your computer for sensitive activities and seek professional help.
  • Use Firewalls: Enable firewalls on your local network to protect all connected devices.
  • Enable Password Protection: Require a password for access to your computer and lock it when not in use.
  • Physically Secure Laptops: Use a cable lock to secure laptops in untrusted, public locations.
  • Create Unique Passwords: Use different passwords for each account to prevent multiple breaches.
  • Never Share Passwords: Do not share passwords over the phone, in texts, in emails, or in person.
  • Use Strong Passwords: Create complex passwords with a mix of lowercase letters, uppercase letters, numbers, and special characters. Aim for at least 8 characters.
  • Enable Additional Security Options: Use multifactor authentication (MFA), such as the one offered in Cornerstone’s online banking system.  With MFA, you typically receive a code as added security protection when logging into an account.
  • Avoid Obvious Passwords: Do not use easily guessable passwords such as names, birthdates, or frequently used words.
  • Remember Passwords Securely: Choose passwords you can remember without writing them down. If you must write them down, store them securely.

Mobile Device Security

  • Enable Passcode Protection: Ensure your device requires a passcode for access.
  • Limit Sensitive Information: Avoid storing sensitive data, such as passwords and bank account numbers, on your mobile device due to the high risk of loss or theft. If sensitive data must be stored, use encryption.
  • Keep Software Updated: Regularly update your mobile device's software to the latest version. Enable automatic updates if available.
  • Review App Permissions: Check the privacy policy and data access permissions of apps before installation.
  • Disable Unused Features: Turn off features like Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and infrared when not in use. Set Bluetooth to non-discoverable when enabled.
  • Secure Device Before Transfer: Perform a “hard factory reset” to erase all data before giving away or selling your device.
  • Sign Out Properly: Always “sign out” or “log off” from apps instead of just closing them.
  • Avoid Suspicious Links: Never click on suspicious links in emails, social media, or online ads. Manually type the web address into your browser for safety.
  • Use Secure Websites: Only enter sensitive information on websites that use encryption, indicated by “https://” and a closed padlock icon.
  • Beware of Certificate Warnings: Do not trust websites with certificate warnings or errors.
  • Avoid Public Computers and Wi-Fi: Refrain from using public computers or Wi-Fi for sensitive activities like online banking.
  • Sign Out from Secure Websites: Always sign out of password-protected websites when finished. Simply closing the browser may not end your session.
  • Be Cautious of Unsolicited Communications: Be wary of unsolicited phone calls, emails, or texts directing you to a website or requesting information.
